hiya!
was with a group of friends today half guys half girls and notcied the convo kept leading to silences where no1 really said anything. so i thought i would use this oppatunity to grab the groups attention and hold court. so when the convo stopped for 3 or more seconds i would say a random joke or throw in a fun game
example:

Is it me or are newspapers going a bit out of depth? i picked up mine this morning after dragging myself out of bed and guess what it said?(pause for 2 secs for building suspence) 'Child obeasity up, pedophilia down. can you belive it!?

this got a great responce and everyone laughed.
this was only tested on one group tho, so results may vary!
