So my English class consists of half the time spent on lecture and the other half working in small groups discussing the readings from the night before. In these small groups there’s not usually any chance to game because most of the people are actually trying to discuss their thoughts on the readings. Today was slightly different though. I was placed in a group with a shy Ukrainian guy and a HB7 that I’ve never spoke too all semester, and I have two classes with her! Well we start discussing some works by Hemingway and the HB makes a comment about how she sometimes struggles to go to this morning class because it’s not that interesting. Once I hear this I run with it. The teacher begins lecturing again and I hand the HB a piece of paper with a tic-tac-toe board drawn up and an X in one of the spaces. We pass this note back and forth until the game was finished (which I won). Then I write on the note…
Me: Better luck next time….?
She then proceeds to draw up another board and start a new game (I take this as an IOI or that she’s just really that bored). Well the game continues until she writes…
HB7: This is much more entertaining
Me: I agree, we should do this more often… rather than English stuff. Do you like coffee?
HB7: I agree & I love coffee
Me: Great, me too. Let’s meet up this weekend for coffee and more tic-tac-toe. #?
HB7: K Sounds good to me (xxx) xxx-xxxx
Me: Great, making new friends is fun (I used some of David DeAngelo’s stuff here, referring to my target as just a friend and confusing her by making it seem as if I’m not into her). It’s still your turn…
Well once this goes down I feel like king of the world. I just number closed a girl that I’ve never spoke to before and I did it without even speaking to her. At the end of the class she comes up to me and says…
HB7: Text me so I can have your number.
Me: Okay (What I should have said was no or made a comment about making the call from me a surprise, like David DeAngelo says the only straightforward answer you give is NO).
I shoot her a text saying…
Me: My number
HB7: (Literally responded in less than 5 minutes, IOI?) KK
My analysis of this whole situation was that I used cocky funny to my advantage. I utilized the boring class setting and provided a silly but more interesting outlet in a game of tic-tac-toe. I appeared confident by directing our conversation. I demonstrated aggressiveness in the sense that I asked for her number within 10 minutes and showed her that I’m the type of guy who takes what I want. All in all, I feel this was an overall successful set in which I used David DeAngelo's cocky funny as my main focus. I used laid back, manly body language that demonstrated disinterest in my target and I feel this ultimately benefited my task making her want to try and earn my attention.
Please feel free to critique! I love feedback and I’m trying to improve so feel free to tear me apart.
