Right, basically the last time I went out I was dressed as follows:

http://img268.imageshack.us/my.php?image=outfitq.jpg

Now I'm 5'5. I do my hair short and spiky but its not like that in the picture. :D

I'm currently a 34" but aiming to get down to 32" waist and a Medium for T-Shirts. For my short and stocky build, what would you guys suggest to wear in terms of stick to shirts tucked in or t shirts and also a nice accessory to complement it all. Any feedback will be appreciated.

EDIT: Cant seem to get link to bloody work so copy and paste it.

Personally, I don't like the untucked long body shirt on you. Not sure if it is the camera angle but it makes your legs look too short. If you don't want to tuck in your shirt then get some which are shorter in the trunk section.

I don't think it is the camera angle ans it looks fairly level. I think the problem is that he is not wearing clothes that fit his body, especially with his jeans. As the baggy look is widening him and in effect making look his height. Skinny or fitted jeans would make him look taller.

That shirt was eventually tucked in and did look a lot better.

An what's the difference between fitted jeans and straight cut ones?

Fitted jeans are skinner than boot cut jeans in the legs. They are not quite skinny jeans tho. As they are loose, but not as baggy as boot cut jeans. They are basically in between the two styles. I don't know if they make them anymore. But if they do it will more than likely be designer label. As they tend to make things more fitting.

Well lets start with what you did right:

Jeans - The jeans look good. Long pants are very helpful for shorter guys to lengthen their overall appearance. I agree with the others that you could go with more fitted jeans to make you look less stocky and leaner. Depending on the condition of your stomach you don't want to go with too fitted jeans where you start to get the "muffin effect" (folds of the stomach budging over the waist of the pants like the top of a muffin).

White Shoes - One of the most overlooked part of a guys appearance are usually his shoes. it's important especially when wearing white shoes that they are clean. Your shoes appear to be in good condition. I like how you matched the white shoes to the white buttons and the white undershirt, and also do I see white strips one the dress shirt?

Now for the areas of improvement:

Shirt sleeves - I don't like the 3/4 shirt sleeve roll. Shirt sleeves should either be all the way down or neatly folded/rolled up to your bicep like a short sleeve shirt with the sleeves turned upwards. The 3/4 shirt sleeve roll you have messes with your body's proportions. It makes you either look too large for the shirt or the bottom of your shirt too long.

Tucking the shirt - Again I agree with the others, especially or short guys an un-tucked buttoned dress shirt throws off the proportions of your body. It makes you look too long in the torso and small in the legs. If you tuck the shirt in, not only does it improve your proportions, it also becomes a great way to show off a stylish belt.

lack of accessories - Now the main problem with your look is that when I go out clubbing or any situation that involves dressing up there are always without fail at least a dozen guys dressed just like you. Solid colored shoes, dark jeans, solid colored dress shirt. It's the basic guy setup. When you go out you do not want to look like the standard issue "club guy". You've got the basic look down, you need to specialize and customize the look. Any guy can put on pants shoes and a shirt, it takes a real guy to accessorize. Add bracelets, rings, necklaces, scarves, ties, hats and bananas to your arsenal. You don't have to wear each and every single accessory, just but pick two or three for the night. It doesn't have to be anything flamboyant or gaudy. A simple leather bracelet, silver ring and solid colored tie is enough to elevate your look.

Hope this helps,
~Antithesis

Can see what belt your wearing but always wear the same colour belt as your shoes - even if this means wearing a white belt. Trust me, it makes you instantly more stylish.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have taken it all in and got some 32" jeans slim fit. Gonna drop some more weight and get tighter shirts/t shirts. Also been looking at some accessories at the moment so any good links to some unique stuff would be highly appreciated.

Got another question though about shoes. If im going to wear a smart shirt with jeans, what sort of shoes should I be looking at? Smart pointy ones or a nice pair of loafers. Considering my height im leaning towards smart shoes due to the heel giving that bit of height, but no idea what sort of shoes goes with jeans.

I would go with loafers. As you are reasonably short the big pointy shoes might make your feet look really out of proportion.

Hi Hasim,

thanks for taking the courage to post the pic, and thanks for everyone else with their constructive comments.

hasim we seem to have similar build though I'm taller. So I'm finding this thread useful too.

I think this has not been mentioned but to me you may need to look at different colours. I feel the whole look is a bit pale, lacking impact. This may simply be down to the photo. I think that it's casual and would work best in daytime.

For night time like others have posted I feel you need to add 1 or 2 accessories. I still feel you need to push the colours, make them brighter sharper. I think a cobalt blue shirt would work well. I have one shirt that colour and have been told by a couple of women that it's nice and they like it. I normally wear it for interviews as I feel comfortable in it.

White shoes are good, but do make sure they are clean, clean, clean. This applies to any colour! Women are obsessed with shoes.

I have a couple of questions. I don't want to steal this thread.

1/ Solid colour shirts. I was looking at getting a shirt that was 2 colours split down the middle so that the left is black and the right is red. I plan to try for a red, white and black thing a bit like the White Stripes image. Would I be able to buy a shirt like this online or have it specially made?

2/ Shoes. I have small feet, just under size 7 (the lowest adult mens size in the Uk) I sometimes feel that it makes me look a bit funny. I can only think of chunky sort of trainers or longer pointed shoes. Any advice?

Hey Slowburner:

1. I'm thinking getting a shirt like that custom made will probably be a bit expensive. I say just keep your eyes open online or at the local stores. Personally I try not to buy dress shirts over the internet unless it's a brand I'm already familiar with because sizing and fitment of dress shirts are always different. T-shirts are pretty much universal, but dress shirts can vary by a lot in the cut of the shirt.

2. If you're really self conscious about the shoes just go half a size to a size larger and wear thick socks. I highly doubt women will notice the size of your feet at any regular event when you're wearing shoes, so don't worry about the shoe size too much.

i'm 5'5 too and I used to dress like that. huh. lol.

anyways, I would suggest a more intense, richer purple and when you do roll it up, roll it up pass your elbows, right above it. Also I would also get a shorter dress shirt. Its kinda hard to find them, but I usually go to H&M for them.

As for pants, blue don't go with the color purple (at least to me.) Go with black or dark gray instead. To me, dark gray as lower wear pretty much goes with anything... belts, shoes, etc.

Belts... I discover this a couple of weeks ago and its GOLD (to me.) Rather getting an expensive or relatively nice looking belt, I went to a skateboard/punk shop. Some of the belts (exclude the immensely colorful ones) really go with dress pants. Its more rock fashion, if thats your thing.

shoes... I would go with black or brown depending on your pants. Blue.. goes with brown. Black... for the darker pants. And.. match your shoes and belt color. White with white. lol. Thats just my take.

I would suggest going to AskMen website to look up some current trends and add your twist to it.

also, [dress shirt / fitted t-shirt] + [fitted/straight jeans / dress pants] is a very timeless style it seems nowadays. Don't forget a blazer. Vests are also nice, its an excuse to me to tuck in and show off my belt. lol.

hope that helps.

I am also on the shorter side (5'-6") and a similar build (muscular/stocky) so I can give you some pointers. Us short guys need to use our appearance and our to overcome women's natural inclination to snub short guys in favor of taller men. You're a handsome guy, you looked well groomed and you appear comfortable in your skin. Right out of the gate you've got a huge advantage. Overall my impression is that you have an unmemorable and boyish style. If you were in a bar you would blend in with a sea of other unmemorable guys and a hot babe might tease you for looking like a young kid. And being on the shorter side, you might not get noticed at all. Your look is fine for the local pub, would also not be socially acceptable for a higher class locale, which frankly is where you're going to get access to the hottest women. When you're planning your wardrobe, think about the classiest joint you could go to (short of a wedding or job interview) and dress so that have a slightly casual style but wouldn't look out of place there. You need to take your outer game up about 2 notches.

Most off-the-rack men's shirts are not tailored for us to wear untucked successfully. The tails and sleeves are too long because the shirt is tailored for an average guy who is 2-3" taller than us. If you go for a button up shirt, go to a higher end retailer where the shirts are made to size. You look like about a 15" collar x 30-31 arm. What they call "Athletic cut" in the states is more form fitting around the torso, but sometimes those can pucker on us short stocky guys so make sure the shirt fits well with no pucker. If you're in UK/Aus. I'm not sure how they size shirts over there.

This may sound kind of weird sounding, but next time you're in a department store, go to the Youth section and try to find some XL shirts that are cool looking and try them on. Kids today are a lot bigger than they used to be and you may find some interesting styles. You'll find that the tails are shorter so they look better untucked (an untucked shirt should not come down past your groin or any outer coat you might wear - shoot for about even with your jeans pockets). The sleeves should fit well without bunching up at the cuff. If you don't want the formal look of a buttoned shirt sleeve, open them up and do a single turn upward. NEVER fold them under unless you're really striving for the redneck/NASCAR look. It's fine to wear short sleeves when the weather permits, but don't try to pull off intentionally showing a lot of skin unless you truly have a great tan and/or muscle tone in your arms to do it. Patterns/lines are also good - vertical lines are obviously better than horizontal for our stature. Create some visual interest on your chest without making it look like the art department threw up on you. Lose the white tee shirt. Get a vee neck tee shirt, go without entirely, or if you must, find one that's got some color. You're a sexual object, right? Show some chest skin to prove it, and having a bit of chest showing helps elongate the region of your body from your hair line down to the first button. If you have some chest hair, all the better. Show it off a bit. Never more than two buttons open on a shirt unless you're going for the hairy old Greek guy look.

Your jeans are fine. I can't see what the top part looks like. I am partial to wide belts with big buckles. Skinny jeans don't fit our frames well, but relaxed fit can look like you're swimming inside, depending on the cut so choose wisely. You might want to get those particular jeans shortened a little bit - they're hanging a little low. Us short guys need to have pants that go straight to the ground so we look a little taller. Pants that bunch up at the shoes make us look more like hobbits. Just because that's an accepted "style" doesn't mean it needs to be your style.

You need to accessorize more. I'd like to see your sportcoat or an over coat or something. Look for some pendants and jewelry. Check in consignment stores or places like charity shops (Goodwill/Salvation Army if they have those in your area). I found an awesome Calvin Klein suede coat that is like a slightly heavier weight but insulated sportcoat in an upscale consignment shop - it fit like a glove and only cost about US$20. My ex-wife threw out my old motorcycle leather which I miss desperately. A stylish but unique hat might be good too. Find some peacocking items and lock in props.

As for footwear - I have two pairs of boots that are my standards for going out. One is a oxblood cowboy boot and the other is more of a blonde/tan fashion boot with a zipper on the inside. Both have easily a 2" heel so that's a great way to get some extra height without going to the extreme of platform shoes. These also came from a consignment shop, not a lot of money invested. With tall boots you can get away with slightly longer pants (in fact it's preferable) but you still don't want them to gather up at the bottom. Nix on the loafers with no socks. Only women look good showing off bare ankles.

Important tip about boots - make sure you don't wear skinny jeans with cowboy boots. If the top of the boot is visible through the pantleg, then the boot is too flared for that jean, or the jeans are too tight for that boot. Boots with tall heels force you to walk a little more slowly, which is a huge help. You walk with a bit of swagger which chicks love and they make noise when you walk, which can get you some attention (not in a club but pretty much everywhere else). As a shorter person, NEVER tuck your pants inside boots. You want your legs to look as long and straight as possible.

Don't sweat your waist line too much. I got laid the most when I was 34" waist. I'm 35" right now and a lot bulkier because of some serious weight lifting I did in my 20s. Of course being trim and healthy is always good but it's not essential to being attractive. You don't show it in your face. Just don't shoot yourself in the foot by wearing skin tight clothes where a little tuck of chub would be noticeable. Keep it easy breezy without looking like you're wearing a tent.

Don't take this the wrong way but you have a slightly pouty face that women can see as boyish. That might work on cougars but if you want to get some hot women your age, consider some facial hair of some kind (well groomed and limited). No Grizzly Adams here, go for a small goatee van dyke. If you were a bit thinner your facial features look like they'd be severe enough to go clean shaven, but for your frame I'd definitely encourage a bit of fuzz somewhere. Even a soul patch would do you well. Your hair looks OK - spike is definitely important. Consider some highlights to add some visual interest to your thick mass of dark hair. Bring the attention away from your widow's peak so you don't have that Eddie Munster look about you. Keep the hair on the sides of your head cropped tight it will help make your face appear less round, which is boyish trait. I cut my own hair with clippers and I always use a #2 and 3 on the side, tapered up a #7 on top with slightly longer bangs that I spike up. Tell this to your barber or stylist and he or she will know what I'm talking about.

I hope all this helps.
