That's not entirely true surely? A man that is so insecure he worries about his appearance can be distinctly unattractive.
As with anything it's about time and place. If you're going down the shops and see a smokin' hot chick are you not going to approach just because you've got trainers on? I think someone dressed in a nice suit and shows to buy some milk is a lot more suspicious than a dude just going to buy some mile with some trainers on.
