The other thing I was thinking about is a good time constraint technique. Turn your phone's ringer off. when you spot your target, set your alarm for 5 minutes in the future. Then open and say:
"Yeah, I can only stay for a couple minutes. My friend is suposed to call me when he's here to pick me up."
Then the alarm goes off, you pretend to answer (your phone will be on silent so no one can call you while you pretend to talk) and you take it from there.
Thoughts?
I'm not really liking this because what happens in the scenario that the conversation does pick up and your "friend" is coming to pick you up? I guess you could pretend that your friend said he would be late and you can pick up the conversations.
I guess I don't really see the advantage of that as oppose to just saying you have to go back to your friends who are in the club/bar and that you can only stay for 2 mins. (2 minutes never really means 2 minutes anyway). You could see how long the conversation lasts and leave when it's dying down. Then look at your watch or phone to see how long you were in there for.
I could be completely off on what you're trying to say, but that's just what I got from it.
