K, so numerous times I've tried opening to women on Myspace/facebook by pointing out that I noticed we shared similar interests. Yet this seems to always fail. Why do you think this is? These women I'm targeting are artsy intellectual types. Not ditzy models.

Could be a number of things. My guess is your choice of topic to talk about when you open them. Girls may think your trying to impress them to being a playing with "common interest". Because for all they know you can be lying about your interest.

Imagine in your profile you said that you like cake. You may get 20 messages of people saying "I like cake too." Isn't that boring? Now let's say one person wrote you message saying "Cake is great isn't it? If you like cake then you may like pie, or turnovers or tiramisu." I think that if you ae going to take the common interest approach then you can't just say you like the same thing and hope for the best. You have to show you have knowledge in what they like and recommend something else they may like as well. If a person likes 80's hair bands and you do as well, then look at their list and recommend a few similar bands that are not on their page. The more obscure the better. If you share a favorite sports team you may say something like " I like the Cowboy too, are you as happy as I am that Terrell Owens is finally out of town?"
These people know what they like. They don't need to know it's good or fun. They have already decided that. You want to take it further. These people you write get one blip from you ever. You want them to want more. You want them interested and if possible hanging. People watch soap operas because it's never resolved. Movies or bands would probably be the best common interest items. Let's say they like some crime type movie like Goodfellas. Part of your message can be ".........if you like Goodfellas, you should check out Casino, A Bronx Tale, or The Usual Suspects to name a few.... the list goes on and on...." But by listing them and implying that you know more it may tempt them to know the others on your list.

Too easy/common to do. Unless you can find something super rare that like no one else likes, then try saying you like things in your pro that your obviously not into. Kinda like you are making fun of her being into it.

I ussually use "Hey, don't really know how I ended up on your on your profile but I noticed you like _____, ______, and ______. You know what.....me too! Let's hang : P

You can fill in those spaces with weird things like shopping, glitter, the notebook, whatever. Just make it clear you are kidding.

Also try my opener. "You know what, I know we have not met, but we have to break up, sry. I want my cds back"
