Richard Bandler is the source.
Much of NLP out there may be really cult-ish without real understanding, (people who don't adapt the thinking that leads to the techniques, and the Attitude, you may call it, as well as knowledge.)
NLP started out as a direct approach to what works and what doesn't work in certain settings.
Thus cutting away all the aspects of therapy (or generally communicating efficiently) that don't work.
So if you can go in, get the knowledge of hypnosis and how people work, and then adopt the mindset that Bandler has which is about making things as easy as possible, you will probably have more success than if you go out and think of NLP as one of these 1,2,3 methods.
There's no thing in NLP that works with everyone. It seems to be more dynamic, and about adapting to the situation with a well-equipped tool-set with tools such as different aspects from hypnosis as well as efficient language that allows you to adapt to the World View the person you are communicating with has.
Dig ?
If you've heard about the ways hypnosis was tested earlier, it went something like the scientists playing a tape with a monotone voice commanding: "Relax,.... Your eyes are heavy! - Sleep... Sleep Sleep..."
And then rating people on a form from unhypnotizable to how deep they could be hypnotized.
So, if you go for these people who think of hypnosis and NLP as something that is static. As though it's an established Science where we already have found everything that is to be explored, you'll get disappointed.
There's a lot of Humbug within every "science" or method.
So, if you ask around a little you'll find the persons you can benefit from reading or listening to, and who are just leeches.
(Just like you want to go to the PUA-gurus and not the Internet Keyboard Jockeys if you want to learn to pick up women.)
Cheers
