Different times for different people. I remember my first time trying PUA techniques. All I applied was smiling, being a little cocky and excusing myself from the target on a couple of occasions with the promise to maybe come back. Had not seen my drunken roommate through the window randomly wondering around the parking lot, I'd have closed.

Think of it like learning a sport or learning how to play a musical instrument. You start to get better than the average person after learning a few basic concepts, and continue to improve as you learn and practice more. Research/forums don't count, learning and practice take place in the field.
