Anyways, it ended out working really well - I excused myself from the conversation and I caught the girl later when she was alone. I got her number and it turns out she lives like 10 minutes away from me so all is well

Good work. I think opening with the family is a valuable skill. It's not unusual to see HBs with relatives. You have to up your game however, as moms and dads know exactly what you want....lol. Its your chance to demonstrate value as a person. You could have told them where you lived, and they would have been shocked that you were "neighbors." You may have been able to get "their address" in front of the family. The neighbor thing was a lucky accident, of course. Getting the number required some isolation, unless they were so impressed with you they offered up their daughter as an offering. Thats pretty rare however, lol.
