I go to the same little convenient store about every day walking back to my apartment from class.

I see a girl working the cash register a few times per week.

Unfortunately, every time I run into her, there are people in line behind me and/or a second cashier there so I haven't felt comfortable opening.

The goal is a number close and a date. Any advice on the best way to proceed?

I've been playing around with this a bit too, and had some mixed success. What I did was make friends with everyone there, then you can talk to any of them and the second cashier isn't an obstacle.

I'd be interested what other people have had success with in this arena. Specifically, making sure to stay out of the friendly category.

seriously? there's no opener necessary... smile and ask her how her day is going... make sure youre buying something... i wouldnt just come up and start talking to her, that would be a bit creepy.

buy something that is a conversation starter that is relevant. off the top of my head i would go with something neutral like a GQ magazine. you can talk about a "date" youre going on this weekend and you need a girls advice on clothes. see if shes doing anything after work, and if she wants to meet you for a drink, and to help pick out an outfit for your "date". that would be an aggressive approach, and you would need high confidence to pull this off, however if youre a bit more reserved, then just make small talk with her and be polite each time you go in, with a little flirting. soon enough youll realize youre in a position where she wants u to ask her out.

ps there doesnt really have to be a "date" if you didnt catch that already.

haha yeah I got the part about the date thing.

Every time I go in there, there is usually polite conversation...I guess the sticking point is asking for her number with her coworker standing right there.

The other issue is if they are real busy, I'd be holding up the whole line, and would probably get a rushed response/make her feel uncomfortable.

I picked up a girl at Sheetz about a month ago. I call her crazy amy, cause she was indeed crazy, but great body. anyway, i started with how her day was, asked if she liked tennis, said i was gonna play a round and she should join me. remove tennis and insert something else, then ask for her number. other cashier? they dont exist. other customers behind you? just make it fast. i had three behind me and a cashier next to her. speed is of the essence, at least in my experience. maybe its just my style, but i dont say im on a date with another girl this weekend.

Good advice...I'll roll with it the next time I run into her.

I feel like solid game isn't vital for a number close in college anyway. It's not like I'm trying to F-close at the store.

Yeahhh.. on situations like this, I think you have to go direct. There is no time to do indirect or whatever opinions.

Confidence! That's all i have to say. Same thing happened to me with a Staples printing girl. Build comfort with her before hand like other when your there in the store. When the bag boy is packing your stuff up just ask her for a cup of coffee or something. If your going to make plans with her make them for the exact same day your asking her out. Make a woman wanna flake less.

i've dealt with some of thses situations before- maybe some of this will help... if she works at like a convinience store; which it sounds like she does. try and walk in when there are minimal people inside- would be too perfect if there was no one in line, either go by her and stop a little bit after the counter, turn and go, i was feeling having some skittles (or whatever) but im not sure anymore, what would you choose, skittles or (another candy) now you get her talking, not showing any interest and already opened. when you come back up could take what she chose, or the other, if you chose hers then say something like thanks so much it was the only thing i could think about during class, if you want here you could move into stacking openers which you could have a question about what your wearing or anything like what do you think of this hat- then you can flip in some fluff about whatever- school and other things. Whatever you do make it seem as casual as can be, be calm, and most of all be yourself.

is there any way to make it shorter or something .. i can memorize all that but still.

also would it be okay to say it to her face to face.

From what I have learned is that checkout girls always want to talk speacialy if you have something intreasting to talk about like where your going etc and like others have said you should not have to open they usally do with a " Hi how are you today" or something simlar so you shoud have no problem expanding as they are actually told to converate with the customer. hope that helps

I think we're missing the most obvious thing we have working for us when gaming a cashier: She's bored! I've worked many of these jobs. Four to eight hour shifts repeating the same artificial "Hi, how are you? Paper or plastic? Price check. Swipe here. Next." over and over and over again. Not to mention the fact that most people treat cashiers as mindless automatons or refuse to get off their cellphone while at the counter. The most exciting part of her shift will be the fifteen minute break she'll spend sitting in her car wondering why the assistant manager is such a tool. Why not "pattern break" her monotony by being the happy thought that gets her through the day?

Yesterday I was at Borders Books and did this. I took one of the sparkly high bounce balls they had at the counter and pretended to read her mind. "You are here physically, but mentally you're already on your break." As others have said, "demonstrate authority over her world".
