I keep running across this one, it is driving me crazy.

MASTURBATION DOES NOT LOWER TESTOSTERONE LEVELS!!!

It does, in fact, increase them, though only slightly and for a short period of time. It increases other hormonal levels as well, some (DHT) far more than testosterone. This increase is in both the blood and the semen.

Now, I have seen a lot of fallacious arguments to prop this crackpot theory up, most of which can be shot down again with cool, clean reasoning. Probably the worst one on this board was the connection of low testosterone with a sluggish mind, ultimately and erroneously presuming that women are stupider than men...

Another one that doesn't make sense, is that for some reason, if you dont wank for a week/two weeks/a whole fucking year/etc your testosterone levels will go thru the roof and women will respond to this. Think about it. If that were true, then guys who never get laid or masturbate should be built like hulk hogan! Testosterone has a direct and sudden effect on muscle mass. You can take steroids and not work out, and you will still put on weight. Catholic priests and monks should be getting stronger by the day!

The truth is, hormonal levels are very carefully and specifically managed by your body, and it takes a lot more to make significant changes in those levels than simply abstaining from a normal daily behavior.

This argument contains as well a direct contradiction to what is generally considered a canonical truth in the PU community, and for some reason folks just gloss right over this glaring problem. If you dont relieve your sexual tension, you are going to get desperate for it. You are going to NEED to get laid. And what is the one thing that women can sense more than anything else? The one thing that is the BIG turn-off for them? Desperation in men. NO NO NO!

Honestly, what about guys who are awesome and get laid all the time, like me? Do I suddenly have less testosterone because I am out bedding women on a constant basis? Does that even make sense? Why would we ever develop a negative feedback for a behavior that is directly related to reproduction? Evolution DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY! Shouldn't I be steaming with male sexual energy? I'm pretty sure that I am, and the women are still responding to me.. Or is there some strange difference between masturbation and actual coitous?? Seriously..

In all of these posts, I keep seeing these same junk theories espoused, but there is never a single peer-reviewed, scientific research paper to back them up. It is pure junk science. It is an internet myth. I study nanotechnology with a focus on genetics and human cellular biology. I have access to virtually every scientific journal that is printed on this planet. I have seen plenty of articles that directly refute these kind of claims, and I have yet to find a single one that backs it up. If you can find one that does, then please post it here. I will be posting other articles in the next week or so to the contrary.

Increased testosterone levels occur when surrounded by a sexual environment.
It increases your urge to get laid. (like you've mentioned)
The higher the testosterone level, the bigger the urge.
This urge motivates us to have sex, which is natural.
And then after we've had sex, we don't feel the desire to have sex as much.
Which means that testosterone levels are low, because that desire is directly related to testosterone levels.

Our subconscious minds know how to get laid because we learned and we are PUAs. This means that we will know how to get laid when we want it, when we have an urge for it, when we desire it.
Conciously we might be thinking "I really want some pussy."
But the subconscious will MAKE SURE we do everything correctly so that we can actually get laid.

When we were AFCs, we'd think that flattering a girl would get us laid, so our subconscious led us to do just that.

Now we're PUAs, we know that we need to do things such as show off value, so our subconscious will lead us to do just that.

subconscious

I like the idea that the subconscious is really in control and the concious is just a pawn and I can certainly identify with it.

I have had loads of experiences (picking up women especially) that almost scare me, like being in the right place at the right time and saying the right thing or remembering the right thing etc. I like to call it "outer conscious experience" or "outer game experience" that is some potent paranormal stuff.
I notice this quite a bit when I am drunk, maybe the subconscious is giving more of a free reign...

Anyway back to the topic:

I think the only benefit of going for a week or more with out sex or masturbation is that ejaculation feels a hell of a lot better!! The release is second to none.

well I feel my libido its not the greatest in the world, masturbation really drains me a lot in motivation to get women, the point I think its not the testosterone, but your sex energy that goes straight into a toilet paper while it could be going in a more constructive way in your life

Here's a related fact:
your sperm count increases when you watch porn.
It increases the most if it's porn with one woman and two or more men fucking her.

:P

I would be tempted to believe this also may go for testosterone levels, but I haven't seen anything that supports that, yet.

btw.
Hooray,
I won't become a wuss because I wank and fuck more than once or twice a week :D
Seriously though,
Isn't the belief that says your testosterone goes down by wanking closely tied to the one that says you get hairy palms and go blind ?

As much as I like having people back me up, this is a thread about scientific fact vs myths and junkscience. Got an article to back this one up? Sounds a bit stretched to me, especially the second part. Not to mention, when you donate sperm (the best source for wide, demographic sperm count data, used in lots and lots of studies) you are nearly always offered pornography, which would tend to skew those results. So yeah, an independant study would be needed..

This article says:
Quote:
The levels of pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA), androstenedione, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), oestrone, oestradiol, cortisol and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in the peripheral plasma of a group of young, apparently healthy males before and after masturbation. The same steroids were also determined in a control study, in which the psychological anticipation of masturbation was encouraged, but the physical act was not carried out. The plasma levels of all steroids were significantly increased after masturbation, whereas steroid levels remained unchanged in the control study. The most marked changes after masturbation were observed in pregnenolone and DHA levels. No alterations were observed in the plasma levels of LH.

Both before and after masturbation plasma levels of testosterone were significantly correlated to those of DHT and oestradiol, but not to those of the other steroids studied. On the other hand, cortisol levels were significantly correlated to those of pregnenolone, DHA, androstenedione and oestrone.

In the same subjects, the levels of pregnenolone, DHA, androstenedione, testosterone and DHT in seminal plasma were also estimated; they were all significantly correlated to the levels of the corresponding steroid in the systemic blood withdrawn both before and after masturbation.

As a practical consequence, the results indicate that whenever both blood and semen are analysed, blood sampling must precede semen collection.
In short, you don't lose testosterone after you masturbate, you actually gain it.

One word. Homeostasis

True but only temporarily until what you've just lost has been reproduced. Doubtfully enough to affect behavior.

;)

I read it in a short article in a Norwegian Science magazine, so I knew I'd find it somewhere.

(here's the original article, it's from 2005 and in norwegian http://www.illustrertvitenskap.com/Cros ... id=9186_18 probably the shortest article around :P and it didn't cite sources, but google helps.)
