Ha, i've been asked this question literally hundreds of times.

It seems like in that situation, she was making sure you weren't gay for fear of feeling foolish when she makes her next move. since you were a little apprehensive, as you said, you probably weren't throwing that many IOI's which reinforced the subtle idea that you might be gay.

Like most people said above though, use that question to turn up the sexuality, after all, it IS a sexual question.

"let's find out" with a raised eyebrow works just fine in a scenario like that.

By the way, the word "metro" is going to die rather quickly. it's becoming more and more common for straight men to be fashionable and groomed, so much so that eventually it will be in the majority.

I'm European and I live in California, my clothing style is kinda normal in europe but really gay here, skin tight jeans etc. I take the opportunity of being metrosexual and have fun with it, it's a way to stand out in the crowd, and yes I do occationally wear make up, yes I paint my nails, who cares, I'm not gay. If a girl asks me if I'm gay I play with it, it's a good way to tease her, to be cocky funny or whatever you're in the mood for. In this case I would have done as many others have said and gone for a kiss!
