Any body language experts out there?.. I have a question.

What does standing with your thumbs tucked into your front jeans pockets, hands outside convey?

If you dont know what I mean search google images for 'thumbs in pockets'

Would you say its more or less alpha than hands by your sides or thumbs tucked into your back pockets?

Cheers

I'd say yes its alot more alpha... It also displays confidence, hands in pockets is a bad thing. i'm in the army so i'm used to doing this as we aren't allowed to be seen with our hands in our pockets.

Cheers for the reply...

Yea I know hands outside of pockets is the only way to be.

But I was specifically wondering what standing with thumbs in your pockets, hands out conveys compared to hands by your sides or thumbs tucked into your back pockets.

Ive been reading a lot about body language lately and what ive found is displaying the thumbs sets an alpha tone. So hiding the thumbs in general would be seen as beta, But i don't see this as a big issue.

Most submissive thing you can do is expose your wrist (inside) or palms, genrally stay away from that when meeting new people. Shake hands coming in with your hand slightly facing downward (alpha). Also dont make yourself smaller ever when shaking hands or anything like that (Bowing, ect)

I would recommend reading soem books on bodyl anguage if you haven't already, most of the books enable you to pick up on more subtle IOIs and also on things such as when the target is closed off to you.

a basic rule of thumb for body language is to always take up enough space for you to be comfortable. by hooking your thumbs in your pockets, you'll have your elbows bent and creating more space for yourself. alpha. but dont overdo this though because then you just look stupid. the most important thing is to be comfortable and to look comfortable, not like someone with invisible lat syndrome.

Invisible Lat Syndrome. Classic! I remember doing that as a kid whenever someone tried to take a picture of me :)

thumbs or hands in pockets is often seen as insecurity...as someone who wants to look cool.

here are some great body language tips:

I tend to tuck my thumbs and forefinger in my back pocket and close my pinky and ring finger so basically I am inadvertently flicking off the whole world, walking slow shoulders slightly moved back to align my posture and expose my throat just a little............... i wear sunglasses all the time so it kinda works with the look

dont worry about alpha and beta
worry about what you find comfortable, just no hands in pockets
if your comfortable then it will be conveyed in how you hold yourself
you want to be comfortable it looks attractive

and smile

You want to keep your hands and thumbs out of your pockets, I know it was described in Julian Fast's Body Languag book, but it looks weird out and about.

If you need something to do with your hands, try squeezing your thumb and middle finger together while holding your hands at your sides. You can also tuck them into your BACK pockets and lean back in the classic community posture.
