Do you guys recommend doing something like that or just being straightforward and just saying it?

Alright, let's give this one a go:
"Hey, can I have your opinion on something? All these car signs and flower decos to ask girls to the dance seem to be played out . . .I mean, WOULD YOU get excited over car signs? Would that be a cool thing or would it embarrass you to death? Tell me, what do you think would be a cool way to pull one off?"
99% answer, "I dunno know" or "Well you have to be creative. You have to come up with one?"
So you go, "OK, OK . . . fair enough. Go to the dance with me and I promise I won't embarrass you with the same ol' crap. I'm going to SURPRISE you tomorrow." Offer your hand.
Then just show up with the same ol' crappy flower shit but wear a blue tie or something. "Did you like the blue tie variation?"
Dude, you're in school. . . that might possibly be lost in a worm hole . . . but still, have fun with it. No need to over think the whole thing.
