Sometimes in social group situations I just get stuck in my own thoughts and do not join in on the group conversation, at all, I just sit back and listen, sometimes zoning out.

I've been asked "Do you ever talk?" before.

Any advice?

If you enjoy your own thoughts you dont need to talk to anyone.

BUT if you are in a social scene no one can hear you inner head chit chat - so give it a voice and TALK! its ok if no one likes what your saying because you do.

Oh yeah, even with alcohol (when I'm drunk) I become more quiet it seems.

Most people think because they can hear, they can listen. But listening is very tough...I admit that i tune people out sometimes too. People can process what is being said a lot faster than it is spoken which is why we can finish other's sentences sometimes. Unfortunately, this also means that we have a lot of time to think about other stuff and end up tuning people out while we entertain your own thoughts. You need to become more of an active listener. Repeat what they say in your head. Think of questions to ask them.

Also if you are debating people, it is very common to tune people out who oppose your views because you are already thinking of a response. Really, you just miss everything they said. So instead, make it a point to seek out everything they say that contradicts your view point. This strategy will have you listening to what they actually say.
