I'd say the truth is somewhere in between the extremities of trying to be the Talented Mr. Ripley and "dressing as yourself". I mean . . . what exactly does "yourself" mean anyhow?
The dress as yourself routine might work if you live in the same place all your life and you frequent the same clubs/bars night after night but if you travel a bit . . . and you want to increase your odds, there's nothing wrong with adopting just a little. There's really nothing written in stone but the bottom line is you want to shine . . . without looking like a total alien.
Hell to the no. If you want to stand out, wear something that will stand out; hats are always a safe bet since not many people wear them these days, but don't go out and camoflage yourself in their social colours, that is the opposite of peacocking and will not get you noticed. If you really want to stand out, dress in the direct opposite way they do but still be charming and have a good attitude towards it. Conforming to them just to get with them will not shine, all it will do is make you seem try hard and they will spot that the moment they see you.
The bottom line: Dress whatever way suits you and you are comfortable with, elseways don't dress any way at all, go sarging dressed like a clown for christ's sake but don't change your avatar just to fit in: That's an AFC move.
