Yes women may be able to tell how much you make as well as what you do from how you dress. But women can also be easily fooled. Its not that hard to trick women into thinking you make a good size salary.
Most of the time when a girl asks you what you do, she is testing you to see that you have a job for one and two try and see how much you make. But if your line of work is interesting or unique, she is most probably going to listen to you.

1. Sure, if you're floating around some small college towns maybe. You go to a hot club in LA, Hong Kong, NYC, Seoul, etc . . . and the girls will sniff you from a mile away. This doesn't mean a poor guy won't score. It just means they the ol' pros can pick out your income bracket right away and the more you talk, the more accurate it becomes.

2. The ONLY reason they ask what you do is to figure out how much you make. If a girl asks you this, ask her how long she's been in the city and it's always less than a year. You gotta love the naive townie girls. Regardless of whether she's lawyer, anesthesiologist, or a check out girl, no girl goes to a bar to talk about work. They go to look sexy, feel sexy, and to make connections at that level. Some will surrender to the pushy of idiots who will go on and on about roi's, dividends, and reverse mergers, and what not, but the only reason they will endure this suffering is to prove that they too can be intellectual. Period. Anytime you see a girl enduring this much suffering at a bar from some amog and I guarantee that an experienced PUA can swoop her away.

Wrong. It is certainly their main reason. It is a way to see how you rank socially. If you rank higher than her, job wise she is going to test you in other areas to see what your overall social rank is. And ig it is higher than hers, she is going to be interest in you.
Some girls do go to bars/clubs to release their stress from work. But I will agree majority of the time this is not the case.

No offense man . . . but English is not your first language is it? I just think there a few things lost in the translation here.

Second, you don't live in a major city do you? I'm not saying you couldn't sarge in a major city . . . I'm just giving your props. If you've actually picked up city girls in major cities (thinking that you fooled em' on some charade of a higher income bracket) you must have some major game. Girls will go with anything once you attract em' won't they?

Its cool. I understand what your saying. I just see things in odd ways.

There are a million different ways to skin a cat, but the one statement that rings true for whichever method you decide to follow is that:
Think about the sparkle that's in your eye when you tell her that you're a professional hopscotch player. You're being mischeveous - hiding the truth from her, but in a playful way. Think about the energy you describe the job with, and tell her that you're part of the committee trying to get it as a demonstration sport for the London 2012 Olympics.

If you can talk about your real job in the same terms, it will have the same effect. What are the basics of it sounding interesting?

1. Energy. Someone else talked about showing the passion that you have for it.

2. Brevity. Summarize in a few sentences, and change the subject. She asked what you do for a living, not for a lecture on the finer points of investment banking.

3. Be Unique. Like Benign said, if you can look at a common or unexciting job in an uncommon and exciting way, that will DHV. Remember that at her core, she's insecure, and wants to be appreciated. This will show her that you're able to look beyond the surface of something, and find inner beauty... which needless to say, can really help your game later in the set.

I never do more than mention my job, if she asks.
