I was wondering if I do negs improperly. I used them, unconsciously before I knew it was a term for PUA so i guess I might be doing it wrong. I joke a lot with a girl I am interested in. Heres a recent example.
A girl who I think is attractive but honestly think her hair isnt great I said:
Yeah i think your pretty, but that hair could use some help...
She laughed and felt a little insulted... all as expected but I tend to end every neg with "im joking" I reassure I was kidding, is this wrong? I figure I already drew attention to it so kidding or not she would notice but, am I still doing it wrong?

If you do ir properly, you shouldnt have to apologise and tell her you are kidding

"You're pretty, but you would look like a rock star if you put your hair up/down."

Negs are walking a thin line between turning someone on or off. They don't work on everyone, and I generally don't like using them unless I've established some kind of identity as a fun guy who jokes a lot.

Unless you can immediately gauge her confidence as being very high try and make sure it is obvious you're joking and don't be too negative. Hair is one to stay away from because in the eyes of a woman it is not easily fixed. Also, hair is something many women will spend a ridiculous amount of time on so negging her on that can take too much air out of the balloon. Try negging her belt or earrings or shoes. Maybe the outfit. Women are sensitive about their hair though.

That being said if you can make it funny everything is fair game.

Pointing to the hair, "I was gonna say we should get some coffee but it looks like you have an audition for Grease this afternoon"
