some girl that works at the gym hb8.5 was talking to another girl there. She was talking loud enough for me clearly to hear 20 feet away.

"i just need to find a guy to take to formal, a cute nice guy that i can take, i'm just so heartbroken"
its just me, and the two girls that work there, I was packing up my stuff to go since the gym was closing.
I turn around and say "okay... i'll take you to formal"
she smiles and laughs
and when I'm leaving I get a big smile and she says have a good night.
I go up to the front desk and this guy is telling how good my advice was for getting cut for the summer, the girls come up to the front desk and talk with another girl at the front desk, we leave about the same time, she's trailing behind with her friend, so i'm walking towards the door, tap my hand lightly on her shoulder, and tell her good luck finding a date to formal.

Seems a little afc to me, but hopefully I see her again and now can easily strike up a convo, but for reference this is what I rather have said
"im looking for a date to go to formal..blah blah blah"
-"what makes you think i'd want to take you"
"haha"
or
"i'm looking for a date to go to formal with, a cute...blah blah"
- walk up to her "hi i'm brian, what's your name"
"her name"
-"you seem like an interesting girl, and i've never been to a formal before, so i suppose if we click you could take me"
"hahah oh really"
-well ya, and if not we could just be friends"
"uh huh"
-"great, so let me get your number and i'll call you"

I don't think I blew it yet, but I'm wondering if I planted the seed in her mind to think about me, or if she's just going to blow it off like some afc

It was a little AFC, but overall I think you did well. Most AFC's wouldn't have the guts to say that to the chick. Also, you TOLD her you'd take her to formal, not ASKED her. Which was very good- you didn't qualify to her.

You did well, but you lacked a follow-up. You could have used that opener really well, but you backed down. You should have thrown something at her as you were leaving- you had a time contraint. You could have treated this chick like a regular pickup and done your usual routine.

What you do now is one of two options. Either, 1) you back off and drop the interaction altogether, or 2) you wait for a bit, and then re-approach gradually. I think you should do the second option.

For a couple of days, pretend that she doesn't exist. Watch carefully for signs of interest from her. On the 3rd day, ask her in passing how the situation for formal is. It shouldn't be concerned- talk like you're asking about the weather. You should be sending some disinterest vibes to her, so she knows you're not begging anything from her. On the following days, start normal convo (without references to formal). From there on, take the interaction wherever you want it to go.

I wouldn't press for the formal if I were you- it would make you seem needy. If I were you, I would use the subject of formal as a vehicle to get an interaction with her. For instance, you could have DHV stories from dances, or C&F lines about her ability to get a date, etc.
