I have a problem! Im at uni, im fine with scripted stuff. I don't know what to say to start and approach someone. Im fine with scripted stuff but I just can't be funny, or spontaneous. I can tlak about general stuff where do you live. BUt when it comes and ive run out of stufff like that, i dont know what to say or where to go. I don't know how to be funny with a girl, or specially if im approaching a larger group (which ive never done)
There are plenty of exercises for this. One is the alphabet game, try this with a male friend first time you do it if that is easier for you. Start talking about something starting with an A (like Audis, or Astrology) when the conversation dies start talking about something on B (like the Beatles, or Basket ball) this is a great way to keep the conversation running, alternate between asking questions about a topic, and making a statement about a topic..
You can also try the TV exercise: This is where you turn on the TV for about 5seconds, shut it off, and speak loud to yourself - keep whatever conversation that was on the TV going!
There are also improv classes to take in most major cities
Another tip I can give you is to stay updated, read papers, magazines, internet articles, anything that can give you interesting material for a conversation.
Watching stand up can also help you with funny comments or quotes to use in a conversation. I recommend Robert Schimmel, he is hilarious.
Good luck my man!
