| Plus side on using it, it's a true story, so you're not just spouting something you read somewhere else, which some guys feel is 'immoral'.
Down side: It can be a fairly controversial topic, and may blow up in your face. Not that it will, but it may.
I'd also leave out the bit about snogging the girl, because while it does demonstrate social proof, kinda, it also comes off as bragging a bit, unless you can manage to hint at it subtextually, and even then.
That being said, anything can work as an opener if you're slick enough. I have succesfully used, "Hey, you stole my ash tray ,didn't you?"

Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you: as Albert Mondego, the man!" (Jim Caviezel, "Count of Monte Cristo")
