I've also read that it's a 'trap', but I think it's relative to your personal game. I approach girls on the floor as I'm
already dancing and they go with it the majority of the time. Just go out there and own the dance floor and you will get noticed.
As far as taking her to the dance floor, I don't see why not. I usually give a small tease implying that they can't dance and then take them to the dance floor to "prove it".
