So i was hanging out with my friends the other day and I just decided that I am going to get a fitted suit and I was trying to figure out what would be a good material. Now i've been meaning to get one for a while now and i am going into it with the mindset what suit would barney wear.

Super 120s wool would be ideal, especially if this is your first suit.

Make sure you get something custom tailored and not black. Black suits are great if you can only have one and you need it for business, church. There are some stores online that do decent custom suits for a good deal (Indochino, Black Lapel) or there's always your friendly neighbourhood tailor.

As for material, try wool for all season. It's a safe bet. Cotton for anything besides winter, linen for summer. Avoid pinstripes unless you're rather skinny.

I'd also check a GQ style guide to see what fits your body best. Suits are great and not enough people wear them right.
