Just to get off topic for a quick second I'm 18 and really want to start muay thai or mma. I did wrestling in high school and it was one of the best things I've done.
I was curious if I'm too old to start and what kind of toll it takes on your body.
Too contribute to the topic when I was in wrestling, I wouldn't tell girls, they'd find out for themselves. I wouldn't bring it up cause I already looked fit and that was enough.
First of all let me say that any kind of martial arts is great for anyone, not just in a physical sense, but mental also. I used a very violent child, getting in fights all of the time and nearly being thrown out of school. But when I started kickboxing, it really humbled me as a person, and made me realze that yes even though I can beat this dude's ass at the drop of a dime I will keep that to myself and not fight other then to protect myself or people close to me/ helpless.
Now to answer your question, you are by no means too old. I have been out of the game for 5 years because of where I was in the marine corps, but now I am going to be starting again in about 2 weeks at the age of 23. It is only as hard as you make it, but being a wrestler you know that the harder you work the greater the reward. When I first started to train seriously I was 15 and in horrid shape, within a year I had lost 50lb's and about 6 months later won a mens national tournement.
Just keep your head up and push as hard as you can, before you know it you will see great results in overall fitness and your skills in fighting.
