NLP is as outdated as any other scientific study of language. (for those of you not clear what that means, it's not...)
Or phrased another way:
Language is an ever evolving, highly variable, incredibly unpredictable means of communication, particularly spoken language. You see this with the difference between typed language, and spoken language (i.e. the loss of context when texting, or posting on a forum.)
Due to the high use of written language in multiple forms of media on a daily basis in the modern age, it has become less and less common for people to attach as much value to connotation, as to denotation, allowing for an easier transition between modern 'written' language (I should say typed...), and that of modern spoken language.
As I'm sure you can imagine, this leads to a slew of complications for those trying to use the same, stagnant methods from the past. However, this is to be expected over time when dealing with language of most any nature, as as stated previously, language is an evolving entity. 'bootylicious' is now in Merriam-Websters, but you hardly find people using words like 'trite' or 'wherefore', just as you don't hear people in the US using 'bees' for 'money' or 'tom' for 'shit'. You also won't hear people in South Africa saying 'OH SNAP!' or 'fuck me gently with a chainsaw' (or really anyone outside a 1980's movie anymore... you tend to get weird looks :-p)
So no, it's not dead. NLP requires much more input than most other things you'll find useful in your PUA endeavors. It's most definitely a study that requires you to learn (commonly via books, articles, classes, etc.) THEORY. You can't just go memorizing and spewing. You'll need to understand how, and why something works, then take that theory and implement it in a given situation, based on HOW it works and WHY it works. Not just that it works, since odds are what you learned verbatim will NOT work.
Pretty much overwrote, like usual, but I'm only here once or twice a year so I gotta make up for lost time
