Do you know how to counter this phrase, it comes up alot more than it's credited for.

I accidently managed an answer to that one a while ago, im not sure if itd be classed as a shit test though.
just try saying "Oh sorry, i thought you spoke english!" and then make to walk away, the girl will interject to tell you she does in fact speak english, and ask what made you think she couldnt, you then do a little imitation of her going UMM OK, with a slight foreign accent, if you do it right it'll be funny, and youl instantly have built up a repartee.
Dont be too agressive when you do it because you'll just seem like a jerk.You can then move on and tell her how, its okay, not everyone can be as effusively erudite as yourself, then joke and say you have no idea what you just said meant. If for the rest of the evening she tries anything at all mean, just reply with the little imitation of her again.
(when i did this i was in france, and i genuinely thought the girl couldnt speak any english! Turns out it works just as well elsewhere, provided what the girl said was monosyllabic enough)
