What he is doing is using a disqualifier. A disqualifier is when you say something that makes your target think you don't want to be with them. It acomplishes two things: it disarms them and makes them think your not gaming them, and it makes them want to try and make you want them.

When you tell a woman that you are not interested in her, it hits her self-esteem. They wonder why you are not interested in her. And more importantly, How they can make you interested. When you say: You are really only saying that she is attracted to you, not that she likes you (she doesn't know you enough yet to judge you, only enough to determine interest or not).
