I've been using this opener I made up for some time now:

me: Hey guys, let me get your input on something really quick.
hb: yea?
me: My friend recently got a pet parrot... and she wants me to help her name it. What do you think is a good name for a parrot?


The problem is almost 90% of the time they will be like "um...i dont know..." and the convo will kinda die out. Anyone want to suggest how I can keep the convo going?

Good idea with the pet parrot thing but give her an easier question to answer and think about.

---> what about something along the lines of "One of my close buddies, who also happens to be my neighbor, recently got a pet parrot but it will not shut up. I don't want to lose someone over a parrot but i want my sleep back. What would you do if you were me?"

and then talk it out with her for a minute and your set

This could make you look stupid if they don't respond. It presupposes that they are intrested in you. It requires attention, it is needy. But I've never tried it.. so it could work =P.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good follow-up, but if they don't hook on it, you're fucked ^^
