I don't use any of the openers that I have seen on the web, because I'm afraid of a girl calling me a PUA. How often does this happen to you guys? Do you ever get called a PUA? I'm sure girls know about the PUA scene. It just sounds weird an un-natural, going up to a girl I've never met before, and running a canned opener. I'm afraid she will look at me and say "Are you trying to be a pickup artist?" Is this an irrational fear? Should I just ignore it and open anyway?
And probably the worst time of the year to be picking up girls, is when The Pickup Artist Season 2 airs. Lots of girls watch VH1. I think Mystery's show is entertaining, but it makes it harder to pick up girls.
How do you get around all of this?

I've been called a player but it's a common theme that you can close them. It's pretty much a shit-test.
You don't have to use the openers that are run on TV. There's a board on the forum full of newer stuff. Take a look and maybe it'll give you some ideas to make up your own.
I think you're using the (moderate) mainstreaming of PUAs as an excuse for your AA. Approach anyway. _________________

It's really not an issue. _________________ "The 'Brick Walls' are there to allow you to prove how badly you want something!" ~ Randy Pausch
