I am not very good at this either, but I have been able to start up innocuous conversations with women on the bus. Just sit next to them or close by and try to start a conversation by noticing something about them or asking a question of sorts(like an opinion opener). If they get creeped out, they'll let you know by moving or do their best to ignore you. But don't let that stop you.
What's the worst that can happen? Generally, no one else around you will care one way or the other.
