I know negs depend on the situation, but does one just open out with a neg?

Negs come to me naturally, but the old me attempts to shackle my new self by whispering doubts and cautions.

any tips?

No no no. People over use the hell out of negs. And it seems that I've seen it much more lately than ever. You don't need negs at all for a pickup to be successful.
