Now I'm not sure if this something linked with early childhood issues, but everyone wants to be wanted( unless you're a sociopath/psychopath) its human nature to want to feel part of something, to feel a belonging.

However when you become needy or make a lot of effort in human relations, whether its business, friends family or someone you're trying to game, it comes off desperate and does the total opposite. Its one of the only times(relationships) in life where i think the more effort you put in, the less you get out.

So how do you stop being needy ?

Learn to be happy with yourself and then everyone else in your life is a bonus. If you can't be happy by yourself that makes you "need" others for your happiness.

Stop trying to find someone or something to fill the void inside of yourself. Once you are happy with yourself and who you are people will intuitively tell and want to be part of your life with you. No one completes you. People can tell. Once you stop needing other people to tell you how great/funny/smart you are and realize that you are smart/funny/great and no one else's opinion changes that you will cease to be needy.

Start to do not give a shit to people.

The reason why girls hate guys that are needy is because girls are attracted to MEN. Being needy is a characteristic of a child not a man. A Guy who acts like a child (needy) “is asking" a girl to treat you like a mother and girls hate that. Women want a man that can lead them into wonderful experiences.
