I do that all the time, to guys and girls, it's so awkward and funny. I dont know why some people get so offended, they think working there is low class?
but I have also had people try to help me and they didnt even say "I dont work here"

If they bristle, just say "Oh my bad. your a girl though, do you know where the _____Is?"
