Hey Guys,

I decided I need to finally sort out my hair. I've been doing my hair up to this point in the style that a friend of mine who I knew in New York made for me. He was a quite good stylist, but never made big career due to personal problems. It worked for me so far and I had good comments from women.

However, it isn't great and therefore I decided now I will finally sort it out. I am currently in college therefore my money is short. I can't afford regular appointments in a top. I decided to make one appointment and establish the cut there. Then I would learn everything about this style in order for a regular barber to be able to replicate it.

About the salons...

I'm in Liverpool and there are two salons I am currently looking @.

1st is Voodoo

2nd is Andrew Collins

I can't see that much difference between the two except that the two together are recommended as the top salons in Liverpool. The few differences, which I do notice are:

Voodoo have better programmed website. They seem more youthful. Also at that salon I can get artistic director for half price, because I get £10 off at first appointment plus 20% off for student discount. However, they have the section where you can review the salon. It appears quite obvious they delete all the negative comments about their salon. They have full 5 stars and every comment is positive. That's pretty shady.

At Andrew Collins I would need to pay full price for an artistic director. Also they seem more reserved and elegant (classy). Also they don't have pictures or short memos about their stylists.

I would appreciate if you guys can skim through both and see, which one is best. However, due to the pricing I'm more inclined towards Voodoo.

Now before my appointment I need to do deep research on mens hair dressing. I will learn about styles, how they created, how to choose your style and etc. I'm planning on having the appointment on Thursday so there is a limited amount of material I can cover in this period of time. I would love some tips on what I should read.

Based on the information I have at the moment I probably will be looking at learning the following number of things:

I. Exactly how the style is cut including the tools used, settings they are on, and techniques applied.

II. Products used to create it.

III. How to re - create it in the morning.

IV. How often I should revisit a stylist for this style to look it's best at all times.

And when asking for a style to fit me I will ask for. They are mostly based on articles I've read on fashionizing site:

I. Hairstyle, which fits my face shape. The stylist will give me a professional opinion, however, based on self test I have oval shape.

II. Hairstyle, which hides my flows and plays up my strength. I personally don't understand this particular advise, because it's not described in detail on the site. I would appreciate tips on what potential flows and strengths a person may have.

III. It should be congruent with my personality. I like to be more classical and reserved.

I will appreciate your opinions on what you guys think about this plan.

I know you are looking at a couple salons and stylists, but I would suggest looking at some hip barber shops. The reason I suggest this is that barbers go to school to specifically learn how to cut MEN's hair, mainly by use of clippers. This differs drastically from the scissor styling usually intended for women's hair.

If you are looking for a longer hair type cut, then maybe a stylist is for you. If you are looking for something closer and cleaner, you should consider a barber.

Barber shops (good ones) also offer a good experience. They are friendly and fun, offering a good conversation, a good environment and an amazing shave if you are looking for one.

That being said, look at review first and find a shop that specializes in your look. I rock a pomp (50s style greaser cut), so I either go to old fashioned barbers, or rock and roll barber shops that can provide a good fade and a shaved in part.

As far as products and how to style, they (your stylist or barber) should point you in the right direction. If you like a specific style, you can usually find videos online on how to do it at home. A Pompadour, for instance, takes a little practice and the right product (I use Layrite, my favorite so far, with some Hick's as a base and hairspray if it is around. Women compliment me a lot on my hair).
