| It's not the sex that makes you more confident, it is the validation you get from girls when they show interest in you. In more general terms, it's not even the IOIs (even if they give you a real ego boost), it is the respect people show you when you talk and express your opinion that makes you more confident.
About canned material... I think you should avoid it if possible, but it's nothing wrong with having some backup stories though. I think it's quite common to have some stories "in storage" so to speak, even if you are no PUA and not even calling it canned material. If you watch one random guy and listen to what he says to people (strangers), I can almost bet on it that he will tell the same stories to everyone, without even thinking about it as canned material. Just make sure your canned material are true stories that you want to share.
If you find yourself in an awkward silence, there are two things that may be wrong with the situation, you, her or both. You should be able to ask open ended questions about whatever hooks she throws at you. It's a basic conversational skill. If you can, and if you have put some effort behind the interaction, but she still says nothing, ask yourself whether this girl is worth the trouble. Either she lacks social skills, is simply boring, or not interested. In either case, it's a reason to ditch her and move on. There is also a chance you just don't click, that you don't have chemistry with each other. If that's the case, you are not meant for each other.
