Can anyone recommend a voice recorder which would allow me to record conversations in nightclubs, obviously not on the dance floor, but music will be playing etc.

When i was practicing story telling i just used my smartphone. Put in in the breast pocket of your shirt. This way you can check recordings and manage them right there rather than whipping out a recorder for that awkward wtf moment. Doubt this will work in clubs tho.
