Be better than the online route.
In sales (many parallels between game) we call this a warm lead, and when you reconnect with someone, you just ask them how XYZ is going/doing. Even if you left on bad terms with a client, checking up on them reopens the dialogue.
We're already acquainted, I'm just drawing blanks on the open that doesn't sound retarded. Especially with the body language missing.
Only obvious route that comes to mind is the common ground in the industry, and ignoring the last few days we saw each other like it never happened.
