I dont know why this happens but most of the time when I am in a conversation, it takes a few moments for me to understand what a girl is saying. this isn't mid conversation, this is right at the beginning.
so I say my opener
the girl says something
I react. I say something like "yeah"

then I think "what did she just say?" and it takes a few moments for it to sink in, and then I go "oops, I gave the wrong answer. the answer wasn't yeah"

English isn't my first language so I don't know if it's a language issue or if I am just nervous or lack of experience. to me, people mumble a lot. sometimes I can't understand conversations on tv either.

anybody else here know what I am talking about?

You are nervous and so your own thought have your attention rather than what the girl is saying. Just ask her to repeat herself, you didn't catch it, you're a bit nervous. Laugh it off.

Just be honest and tell her to speak slow etc, she will understand that you're not native to her...
