I was pretty sure she was attracted to me.

Then one of her guy friends who was always there for her (who i know) told her he liked her.
She told him she liked him back.

How did this AFC beat me!? I don't understand.
Should I confess to her that I like her too before they start taking it to the relationship level?

Because you weren't interesting, you didn't create enough tension, you didn't flirt enough, all you did was give her signs that you didn't like her.

You lose, move on.

How hot/popular was she? The stuff you're doing seems to work well on insecure HB9s and 10s, but I've found out that the less attractive ones (or at least ones that aren't used to being hit on and complimented) respond better to genuine interest.

Or, as son1ce said, all you did is neg her and do lots of negative things but never did anything to even suggest that you were genuinely interested in her, so she gave up and and settled for the AFC guy because she was willing to take what she can get. She may have liked you more, but in her eyes, you weren't an option, and he was. If you dangle a string right above a cats head, he/she will try hard to catch it, but if you staple the string to the ceiling, he wont bother.

Or you took too long to escalate. Believe me, I've made all of these aforementioned moronic mistakes myself as well.

Well I think this boils down to rapport. That AFC just had more than you and she probably was attracted to him as well. So I wouldn't take it too hard.
