I've tried expanding, but mostly unsuccessfully. I always end up becoming acquaintances with the people I meet and they don't feel comfortable inviting me places yet. Any tips/advice?

You know the type of person, the guy (or girl) who is friends with EVERYONE. Then, once ur friends with them, every1 will want to be with you (since ur with them).
Make sense?
