This is an interesting science story on how females do not always select the most aggressive, read alpha, males to mate with and evolution does not favor this type in selection. It doesn't refute the game at all of course, in many respects it can confirm it, I just think it might help to put it in perspective if you get too much in the mode of trying to out alpha the other guy.

This is were experience comes into play. Figuring out the best move to make, take a chill pill or play aggressive. Like chess defense or offense.

The research on the mating rituals of fruit flies, while interesting, does not necessarily have an close application to humans. Humans are more social animals than flies, and have thus developed more complex hierarchical systems of social dominance. I'm also not sure why they equated fitness with aggression.

With all that said, of course it is not the case that raw, unchecked aggression is the motivating factor behind all mating protocols, or even social dominance. While size and strength are certainly factors behind social dominance, equally important are the political aspects of alliance forming.

Sociobiological issues are extremely complex, and the attempts to simply them, even within the community, are often mistaken.

If anyone is interested in learning about these things, you can either read E.O. Wilson's On Human Nature or Melvin Konner's The Tangled Wing. Both are excellent--Wilson won the a Pulitzer for his.

Aggressiveness does not always imply alpha. Often it implies neediness or emotional problems. An alpha commands, not demands. Assumes, not forces. These are subtle but crucial differences.
