I was discussing this issue with my friend. I met these two girls on this field trip I went to, and we went back together to the university, on occasion, there would be this awkward silence, so I ask a question to keep it going. He told me that it's better to admit the obvious then try to avoid it. For example if he was in the situation with awkward silence he would say "Well I asked my question now I've got nothing to say" or "So why are we silent all of a sudden"

Thoughts?
