I've heard several PUAs and PUGs address this:
David D. - I'm glad you like it. (w/ sly smile)
Brad P. - Yeah, I'm the most arrogant man in the world. (quickly and blandly as if it were a passing thought)
Lance Mason - And you're so cute ... you're like this little girl. (lots of smiling and teasing)
etc.
It depends completely on her tonality as to what she meant by this, and is widely open to interpretation. The only instance sighted I could address is the time with *big smile* behind it. For that the Dave D. method is perfect, but what you said could be just as effective provided you said it the right way. I'm gonna guess you probably did.
As for calling a girl shallow ... I try very much not to use that word ever. I have a theory it was a word invented only to make a negative out of the fact that men are visually oriented. We're genetically designed to like pretty girls, but there is enough variation in our tastes to accommodate almost any woman. For the rest we invented beer.
