I agree with a themed party, however I wouldn't suggest it for the first one. You first need to gauge how many people are going to show up. Sure, you can invite 500 via Facebook, but they all aren't going to show. Once you get this done, start thinking of good themes. A few I have done...
-Cookout/BBQ/Bonfire
-Highlighter party (with black lights)
-ABC party (anything but clothes)
-Golf Pros and Tennis Hoes
-Black and White
And of course, holiday parties are fun. I've hosted some decent halloween parties, pre-Thanksgiving parties (Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, for some reason its a big night to go out), New Years, St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc...
Also, I wouldn't get kegs. They are a waste of your own money, people are already using your house to party you don't need to pay for their beer as well... Make sure you have a good playlist going, something everyone will like.
I have lived in four different places since I've moved out of my parents house, and the cops have come to three of them because of parties (we just moved into the fourth). The first time I was living in an apartment and a fight broke out in the hallway. The second time was because there were kids standing outside and the neighbors thought it was a drug deal (?). The third time it was because some idiots threw beer bottles in the road outside our house. However, the cops did virtually nothing. But regardless, know who is coming to your parties. You don't want some asshats showing up and ruining the night.
Here are some pics that I found on Facebook from my houses...
