This is pretty much the case where I live, men are generally very quick to physically attack one another (read: very insecure and confused) so I'd pass on this approach in most situations :)

If this is something you want to do, it needs to be something more sly that the girls will pick up but won't directly offend the guys.

In theory, yes, but depending on the environment, other guys can be very defensive and try to keep you out of the circle, which itself is cockblocking and needs t be countered even though they may not attack you directly and verbally.
