I tried this the other night off the top of my head (basically one of the guys I was hanging out with kept telling the girls I was a PUA, trying to blow my set, so I had to think on my feet and re-open the set.)
I think with a little polishing it could be not only a good opener, but can put across some DHV spikes too.
OK, so here's a more polished version than the one I used. Let me know your thoughts.

"Hey, guys. Let me get your opinion on something. When you have a glass of red wine do you hold the glass by the stem or the bowl? I can never remember the etiquette."

This can lead onto:

"I can only stay for a minute, I've gotta get back to my friends, but the reason I ask is a few weeks ago I took a friend of mine out to dinner at this classy restaurant. Anyway, the wine comes and she's giggling to herself as she watches me suffer with the waiters glaring at me in disapproval. In the end, I said to hell with it and just started drinking straight from the bottle "

Like I say, I've only just thought of it, so it needs polishing, but I'd appreciate any feedback you have.

I would assume that this would work very well in the right age group. Younger girls might not get it/not know what is right. I am intrigued enough to try this line the next time I'm at a good Tappas bar.

I don't like the ending, it's not that believable which means this story with obvious DHV drops is probably fake.

Maybe you could end it with something like "In the end, I said to hell with it and ordered a beer."
or "In the end, I said to hell with it and drank it with both hands like a bowl of soup."

No one who wants a second date takes a girl to a classy restaurant and starts drinking from the bottle.

Great one, love it.

(It's red by the bowl, white by the stem by the way - because white wine should be drunk cold). If you're drinking wine with a girl who's doing it wrong (and if it fits the rest of your personality!!) you can also do a subtle neg by earnestly correcting her. Do it as un-snobbishly as possible, but as if you're just trying to help her. This has worked for me in the past.

The story isn't about taking a girl on a date, it's about taking a female friend out to dinner just because. Plus, the drinking out of the bottle thing I think shows spontaneity and a willingness to laugh at oneself.

Like I say, though, feel free to change it if you want. I've already thought of a slightly better version that I'm gonna try out.
