depending on the girl.. START LOOKING THROUGH it trust me she'll take it back, warn her that you'll look through it if you want but of course if you warn her and she still gives it too yah she doubts that you will or she doesn't care..

but if she doesn't want you going through it... she wont ask you again

What I would do is look her in the eyes and say sure I can hold it for you.

But don't take her purse. Just keep looking her in the eyes until she says please. If she doesn't, give her a little moral lesson on saying the magic word and tease her about it.

Girl: Hey can you hold my purse?
Me: Yeah I can hold it for you *Just stand there looking at her in a curious perplexed way without making you hold out your hands to take the purse*
She will eventually try to gesture for you to take it. And she'll be like wtf, why isn' he taking my purse like he said he would?
By a second or two, if she doesn't say please, tell her about it.

I learned this the hard way, from asking for a lighter once. Then I used it successfully when I used to work as a busboy when a waitress has a dish and tells it to me.
