It seems that if you come from behind you are violating the cardinal rule of approaching from behind. If you come from the front, if you approach at an angle you can avoid having confortational body positioning. However, since they were moving and now by the front approach you have essentially stopped their motion, it still seems unfluid/akward/uncomfortable.
