So I met this shy girl at a social gathering. She wasn't really responding so much, but was interested on an intellectual level. After the gathering I walked her out and got her number. This is a week ago. We made tentative plans to go for a hike a couple days later. I text the day before to confirm the plans and she says maybe we can do something else. I text her the day of to see where she's at and she doesn't even respond. I text her next day and she tells me she's interested in meeting, she just has a lot going on. I ask her whether sat or sun works better for her. She texts me sat and tells me she's sick.

A friend who's a shy girl says I need to take charge and basically tell her I'm not going to play this game and to just come out and and have fun otherwise she's missing out. This sounds like an ultimatum, which I don't like, but I have no use for a girl that I only text. I have tried texting her with some fluff, but she gives uninteresting answers or barely responds, sometimes she'll throw something out that looks like it took more than 1 second of thought. Thoughts? Good idea/bad idea?

Ultimatums are always a bad idea imo. Just wait it out a bit, then contact her and try to make a definite arrangement for meeting up. If she is flaky or non-responsive, move on.
