So an ex that I have kept in contact with (and I know I still have a strong chance with her) texted me today at 1 pm with "Help me?" I wasn't near my phone at the time, so I respond around 2 with "What's up?"

It's 5 and she hasn't responded (very uncommon for her). It may just be a game to get me thinking, but I do want to know what the text was about. If I were to text again, I would probably say "Hey. You cant get away with sending cryptic text messages like that without at least telling me the story."

Critique? I know it may be DLV to text twice, but I really do want to know. Honestly, the type of girl she is, she may have been testing to see if I care about her, and I'm not sure on the proper response for that.

Wait for her reply. If she doesn't give you one than it must've not been a big deal. Move on.

It's probably better for you to wait a bit. You know better than anyone else that we pull this trick off all the time. Mystery texting has exactly the purpose to keep you wondering and make you send multiple times. Just wait it out and you'll be fine.

Yeah I think I just needed someone to tell me not to reply. She texted me later, she had a short notice meeting about something secret with the dean at her school and didn't know what to wear. Ended up sending pictures of outfits so I could pick one then we had a short phone call where I think I did very well, started talking about Indian religions and a book I had just read. Very high value stuff and she seemed enthralled.
